We use anion photoelectron spectroscopy and flow tube ion-molecule chemistry to study the structures and reactivities of metal clusters and metal-ligand complexes in the gas phase. The electron affinities, electronic state energies and vibrational frequencies measured in these experiments provide insight into the chemical bonding and isomeric structures of the neutral and negatively charged clusters and complexes, and provide data against which to test computational predictions. This research can contribute to an improved understanding of the chemical reactivities of metal catalysts and the evolution of metallic properties with increasing particle size.
