Correction to the Temperature Field in the Upper Layer of the Earth’s Core Due to the Relief: Perturbation Theory

Abstract

The topic of the article is estimation of effect of the two-dimensional relief on the temperature field in upper layer of the Earthʼs core. The situation in which the amplitude of the relief is comparable to the depth of the heated layer is determined. This depth is about ~3 m, if we are speaking about the yearlong mode. A perturbation theory is developed. An approximate solution to the heat equation is obtained: through integrals for an arbitrary relief and through elementary functions, if the line of the relief is a sine curve. The variation in temperature along fixed local depth lines is analyzed. It is shown that the amplitude of temperature oscillations takes the smallest value in points, located under the minima of the relief line.
