The effect of structural reforms on employment and the trade–labour link: Robust evidence from Europe and Central Asia Economics of Transition (IF 0.611) Pub Date : 2024-01-24 Natasha Rovo, Jesus Crespo Cuaresma, Gallina A. Vincelette
We use Bayesian model averaging techniques to assess the role of different types of structural and institutional variables and their interaction with specific characteristics of the economy, as determinants of employment dynamics for 30 economies in Europe and Central Asia. We find that, once short-run dynamics are controlled for, common structural determinants for the employment rate emerge, including

Analyzing the health implications of rising income inequality: What does the data say? Economics of Transition (IF 0.611) Pub Date : 2024-01-23 Alex O. Acheampong, Eric Evans Osei Opoku
Does income inequality worsen a country's health outcomes? In this study, we examine the effect of income inequality and redistribution on health outcomes using a panel dataset for a global sample of 154 countries from 1990 to 2020, and the instrumental variable method. The evidence from the empirical analyses revealed that, on average, higher income inequality is associated with poor health outcomes

Measuring the scale of envelope wages: Evidence from Poland Economics of Transition (IF 0.611) Pub Date : 2024-01-20 Marek Kośny, Jakub Sawulski, Aneta Kiełczewska
We develop a methodology for measuring the scale of the unregistered wages paid to staff by employers. We show that the differences in earnings distribution between public- and private-sector employees are not reflected in the distribution of expenditure. Assuming that public-sector employees do not receive unreported income, this points to undisclosed income in the private sector. After showing that

Financial inclusion and monetary policy effectiveness in a monetary union: Heterogenous panel approach Economics of Transition (IF 0.611) Pub Date : 2024-01-03 Jeleta Kebede, Saroja Selvanathan, Athula Naranpanawa
We examine the nexus between financial inclusion and inflation targeting monetary policy effectiveness in West African Economic and Monetary Union countries by employing a heterogenous panel approach that enables us to delineate the responses to policy innovations related to idiosyncratic country-specific shocks, common shocks, and composite shocks. We find that these shocks significantly affect inflation

Sophistication gap between countries: The effect of research and development expenditure Economics of Transition (IF 0.611) Pub Date : 2023-10-31 Brice Kamguia, Joseph Keneck-Massil, Henri Njangang, Sosson Tadadjeu
A recent strand of the literature suggests that economic sophistication is a strong predictor of economic development. Given that this branch of literature is relatively young, the determinants of economic sophistication have not yet been fully explored. This study contributes to this literature by examining the effect of research and development (R&D) investments on economic complexity. By applying

Family involvement, innovation and product market competition Economics of Transition (IF 0.611) Pub Date : 2023-08-24 Sukhdeep Singh, Indrani Chakraborty
The paper constructs a theoretical framework suggesting a moderating impact of product market competition in determining the relationship between family ownership/control and innovation. We argue that the elimination of ‘career concerns’ of CEOs in firms with greater family share may explain the mechanism followed to encourage R&D investments. Empirical testing of the hypotheses is performed using

The impact of common law on the volume of legal services: An international study Economics of Transition (IF 0.611) Pub Date : 2023-07-08 Enzo Dia, Jacques Melitz
We show that the heavy use of legal services relative to output in the US is not a peculiarity of the country but applies to common law countries in general. It can likely be attributed largely to better ability to contract and adapt to changes in the environment. Yet common law also opens significantly more room for rent seeking by lawyers than civil law. Thereby the costs could outweigh the benefits

We also investigate whether the establishment of an IA function is associated with

We use a new longitudinal dataset at the firm level and at quarterly frequency between 2012 and 2018 to document the size distribution of firms and to provide evidence that it follows a power law. We find that the largest 30 firms explain nearly 80 percent of the growth in aggregate total factor productivity. This

However, in semiparametric analysis, we find that lower-level corruption is beneficial to increase

As predicted by the model, the data show that household asset accumulation depends on women's asset control in a non-monotonic
